a5c7b9f00b When the President of Russia dies and his replaced by a man with a cryptic past, putting the United States on alert to rising Cold War fears. When the CIA suspects that renegade Russian scientists are attempting to develop more mobile nuclear weapons, East-West tensions over flow. CIA director William Cabot sends his best agent, Jack Ryan into action. What Ryan discovers is that terrorists are planning to provoke a war between the U.S. and Russia, by detonating a nuclear bomb at a football game in Baltimore.
When the president of Russia suddenly dies, a man whose politics are virtually unknown succeeds him. The change in political leaders sparks paranoia among American CIA officials, so CIA director Bill Cabot recruits a young analyst to supply insight and advice on the situation. Then the unthinkable happens: a nuclear bomb explodes in a U.S. city, and America is quick to blame the Russians.
First of all, let me stated that I have read all Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" books (except for the latest Executive Orders), and I have watched every movie adaptations of his novels.

I have a mixed feeling about this movie. I don't think it is that bad (as an action flick, that is) but it is not up to the task either (as a novel adaptation). Let's look at the low points of the movie:

(1) They strayed away from the original plot in the novel. However, if you do not read the novel at all you will find that a lot of places in the plot just doesn't make any sense. For instance, why the nuclear explosion in Denver… sorry Baltimore did not wipe out the city, and why the Russian President Nimarov (spelling?) trust and listen to Ryan more thant the US President.

(2) The original plot is supposed to be a conspiracy between the Arab extremists/terrorists who want to induce fear and confusion to the US + Russian, an ex-East German intelligent agent who couldn't handle the new era in Germany and the world alike, and a native america who hate the US government partly because they killed his brother (there is a couple others that I forgot… I read the novel a many years ago). They couldn't handle the new peaceful era of the world and they all like to take the world back to their likings. Where is that Neo-Nazi nonsense comes from? Those old white male right-hand extremists in the movie are just so lame and unbelievably one dimension.

(3) So, why do we have to rollback Jack Ryan age and marital status? And, why is John Clark look so young? Is Tom Clancy really have a say in the making of this movie? This is just make for Ben Affleck, isn't it? And, BTW I'm really disappointed their treatment to the Mary-Pat Foley character in the movie (a pregnant disgruntle unintelligent woman? Give me a break).

(4) Why do Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) running around all over the place towards the end of the movie? Is he needed in the dock in Baltimore?

(5) Last but not least, there may be way to get pass the defense line of the US carrier group, but what they have in the movie was too easy! The carrier is only guarded by the galting guns? Come on!

However,a action adventure flick it is quite entertaining:

(1) The casts are choosen well, and I'm surprised by the performance of Ben Affleck. The role fit him well in this movie. Not to mention the top notch performance of Morgan Freeman (did he ever let me down? no).

(2) As an action movie there is not many times that are boring. It builds up the tension, release it, and build up another one. At least I didn't fall asleep.

(3) Special effects are OK. However, they should show more of the explosion (or may be they don't want to upset US viewers after 9/11 too much?)

(4) Human emotion are potrayed quite nicely. It shows the anger and fear of the people after the attack.

BTW, about the nuclear bomb not went off during the fighter plane crashed: I'm no nuclear scientist but if you have read any modern physics book for layman or freshman course you will know that it takes a lot to have a nuclear fusion explosion in terms of energy needed and precision. A situation like a plane crash WILL NOT cause a nuclear explosion. Also, because of straying away from the original plot of the novel, everyone here is complaining about the unrealistic aspect after the nuclear explosion during the Super Bowl. In the original plot there was a screw up in the manufacturing of the plutonium matter for the bomb, so the fusion process during the explosion cannot go all the way; the yield of the bomb was so low that it only destroyed the Denver football stadium and some surrounding buildings, not to mention the fact that the bomb was exploded INSIDE a concrete structure did help to contain the extend of the destruction (usually nuclear weapon explodes in the mid air right on top of the target to gain maximum effect).

Also, those bombers that destroyed the aircraft carrier are not MiGs I believe, but I have to look up my copy of Jane's mil. aircraft guide to confirm. I could be wrong.

At the end, "The Sum of All Fears" is an entertaining movie to watch, but it can only stay at that level, being entertaining and nothing more. I can only give it a 6 out of 10 at most. To be honest, I was not expecting a lot from "the Sum of All Fears" movie adaptation after I have seen "Clear and Present Dangers", though.

Last but not least, I still think "The Hunt for the Red October" is a better movie adaptation of the Tom's novel than all the others including "The Sum of All Fears".
I watched this movie last night, and thought it was ok. But, after reading the first few comments today I found myself feeling annoyed and put-out that I someone else wasted their money on this movie for me.

Destroying the Jack Ryan character in favour of having a young popular good-looking jock play it was a mistake. I can't even overcome my disappointment by attempting to view the charactera kind of archetype of Clancy heroes. Affleck's characterization of Jack Ryana weak, simpering, mewling post-adolescent was a horrible dissolution of the character I'd come to expect and certainly didn't even touch Ford's protrayal despite its insipidness when compared to Baldwin's portrayal.

In my mind Clancy allowed his creation to be betrayed.

Freeman definitely puts the boots to the other actors (once again!) and manages to walk away from the film without any egg on his face. I don't know how he does it, but if for nothing else this ability he must be commended on. After all, this is a man who was capable of finding work after being in a Kevin Costner production.

Liev Schrieber also does a phenomenal job in playing a Clancy character the way it was meant to be instead of some waffling new-age commando.

BTW - does anyone know where I can get a cell-phone, wireless PDA and the supporting commercial infrastructure that can resist the EMP of a nuclear blast? Or perhaps glass that doesn't shred bodies to mince when shattered by a blast wave?

At least Paramount won't have to worry about this movie being pirated. I can't imagine who would want to waste the drive space.
Surprisingly uninvolving, the least effective of Neufeld's Clancy-based movies. Surely he was not looking for this kind of film: one that bombs literally and figuratively.
The President of Russia has just died of a heart attack, and a new President—Alexander Nemerov (Ciarán Hinds), an unknown commodity—has been named. However, U.S. President Robert Fowler (James Cromwell), his advisers, and various CIA officials fear that Nemerov is a political hardliner, so CIA director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman) recruits young CIA historian Dr Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck), who once wrote a paper on Nemerov, to supply his analysis and advice on the situation. U.S. suspicions about Nemerov are further supported when Grozny, the capital city of Chechnya, is hit by a chemical weapon and Nemerov claims responsibility (when, in reality, he has no idea who is responsible). When a nuclear bomb is suddenly detonated in a football stadium in Baltimore, no further proof is needed. As hostilities accelerate between the U.S. and Russia, Jack suspects that Nemerov didn't order the attacks and tries to find out what is really going on before SNAPCOUNT—the order to launch ICBMs at Russia—is completed. The Sum of All Fears is also a 1991 novel by American author Tom Clancy. It is the fifth novel in the Jack Ryan series, and the fourth of the Jack Ryan books to be made into movies, preceded by The Hunt for Red October (1990) (1990), Patriot Games (1992) (1992), and Clear and Present Danger (1994) (1994), and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) (2014). Without Remorse is currently in development without an expected release date. The screenplay for Sum of All Fears was written by American screenwriters Paul Attanasio and Daniel Pyne. Because he doesn't know who ordered the attack whether it was done by terrorists or a rogue group within his own army. Nevertheless, he explains to his close adviser, former KGB assassin Anatoli Grushkov (Michael Byrne), it is "better to appear guilty than impotent." Spinnaker is Cabot's secure source inside the Kremlin. They exchange info with each other, keeping "the back channels open in hopes of staving off disaster." His identity is revealed at the end of the movie. Unable to speak to President Fowler, who is busy in the National Military Command Center (NMCC) ordering a strike on Russia, Jack uses the hotline to get the message to Nemerov that he knows the bomb that hit Baltimore was not Russian. The bomb was salvaged from a downed Israeli A-4 jet in 1973 and sold to a neofascist who then paid the three "missing" Russian scientists to activate it. The bomb was then hidden inside a cigarette machine and shipped to the U.S. where it was placed in the Baltimore Stadium and detonated in an attempt to set the U.S. and Russia at each others' throats. Jack asks Nemerov to stand down his forcesa show of good faith, which Grushkov supports. Consequently, Nemerov calls off the attack on the United States, and President Fowler follows suit, calling off the U.S. attack on Russia. With the crisis diverted, Jack heads over to Memorial Hospital to find Cathy (Bridget Moynahan) unharmed. The participants in the conspiracy are assassinated: Olson (Colm Feore) by John Clark (Liev Schreiber), General Dubinin (Evgeniy Lazarev) by Russian agents, and Dressler (Alan Bates) by Grushkov. Fowler and Nemerov sign mutual nuclear disarmament agreements and address the public on the South Lawn of the White House while Jack and Cathy are picnicking near the National Mall. They are approached by Grushkov, who reveals his identitySpinnaker and invites Jack to keep in touch with him, justBill Cabot used to do. In the final scene, Grushkov gives Cathy an engagement present, which astounds her because Jack only asked her to marry him that morning. Jack asks Grushkov how he could know, but Grushkov just shrugs his shoulders, smiles, and walks away. The nuclear bomb was intended to repulse the invading Syrian Army which was making threatening gains into Israeli-held territory. The Skyhawk is destroyed by a surface-to-air missile (SAM), and the bomb crashes into the desert where it is buried by sand over the years. In the novel, four Israeli Skyhawks were each armed with a nuclear bomb. When the Syrian Army advance is halted in the Golan Heights, the necessity for the strike is averted. But chaos on the airfield, which involved a damaged F-4E Phantom igniting leaking fuel upon landing, result in a nuclear bomb being accidentally left on the fourth Skyhawk during the rearming process. All four Skyhawks are lost in an attack on a Syrian SAM battery. The unarmed nuclear bomb broke loose from the fourth Skyhawkit disintegrated in mid-air, burying itself meters from the home of a Druze farmer. It is obtained by PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) terrorists years later. It is never explained in the film. In the novel, the Skyhawk was lost within Syrian territory east of the Purple Line (now a United Nations buffer zone), close to the Syrian-Lebanese border. Furthermore, Israel did not know there was a nuclear bomb missing until three days after the Skyhawk was lost over the Golan Heights. But it was not until the day after the Yom Kippur War ended that they were able to reconstruct the details of its loss. Not exactly. Though Ben Affleck does try to emulate Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford in some parts, this film is largely treateda separate continuity from the preceding films. Evidence of this is the fact that the technology used is obviously present-day (suchthe use of e-mail and cell phones), while The Hunt for Red October took place during the Reagan administration. It's also clearly set in a post-Cold War world. This also explains the apparent contradiction of having Jack Ryan meet John Clark for the first time in both this film and Clear and Present Danger. Finally, Jack and Catherine are in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship in this film, while they were married in the other three films. Clancy heavily criticised the film, mainly for its technical flaws. In the DVD commentary with director Phil Alden Robinson, Clancy introduced himself"the guy who wrote the book they ignored." He slammed Robinson's work throughout the commentary.
